Freshman Hinkle finishes second in state cross country meet
Freshman Payton Hinkle became only the third Broken Arrow High School girl cross country runner to finish as runner-up at the OSSAA Class 6A Cross Country State Championships Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe High School.
Hinkle, a regional champion and school record holder, finished just 2.8 seconds behind Norman High School senior Sophia Maag over the 3.1 mile course.
Overall, Broken Arrow girls placed eighth in the meet.
Andres Chapa finished 15th on the boys side to earn All-State Cross Country recognition. Chapa is the first Tiger boy runner to nab all-state honors since 2015.
The boys placed seventh.
“This is a group that I will remember as the ones who got our program back on track,” said head coach Shane Messinger after Saturday’s state championships. “The confidence and commitment of some of our individuals led to some great team achievements.”
The achievement Messinger was spoke of was getting back to the state meet. The fact they did has him excited about the future of Tiger cross country.
“I see a hungry and highly motivated group of underclassmen, who are willing work and ready to go for the biggest prize next year – that is the state title.
