Goal met - Both boys, girls teams qualify for XC State Meet
State cross country in Edmond on Saturday
Saturday evening, as Coach Shane Messinger was reflecting on that day’s regional cross country meet, he mentally checked the box at the top of his list of goals for this season.
Messinger, in his second year of his second stint as Broken Arrow Tiger Cross Country coach, saw both his boys and girls teams qualify for this Saturday’s Class 6A OSSAA Cross Country State Championships.
“It was very fulfilling for our kids and the coaches,” Messinger said. “You could see during summer workouts that this group was committed to our goal. They have worked selflessly all season, and I couldn’t be more proud of our athletes.”
Freshman Payton Hinkle ran an 18:48.9 in nabbing the regional gold medal. She crossed the finish line nearly 20 seconds ahead of second-place runner Maddie Medina. Payton’s time was the best qualifying time that day, as Sophia Maag, the top finisher on from the west, ran a 19:38.9.
Broken Arrow girls placed fifth in the East Region. Girl qualifiers are Hinkle, Linsey Lee, Alli Bonham, Ashley Wyatt, Clarissa Sisson, Terrah Wells and Maggie Cleghorn.
The boys placed second in their regional. Andres Chapa and Blake McConkay finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Chapa ran a 17:03.2 and McConkay ran a 17:13.8.
Joining Chapa and McConkay at State are Jaxon Leming, Holden Lenz, Blake Feron, Carson Detherage and Nathan Ashe.
The Class 6A championship is Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe High School. The girls run at noon. The boys start time is 12:45 p.m.
It’s the first time in four years that either Broken Arrow team has qualified for the state meet. Broken Arrow boys won the state title in 2009 during Messinger’s first time around as head coach.
Tickets for the state meet are $7.
