13-3 Lady Tigers off to Colorado for traditional tournament
Becoming nearly as traditional as Labor Day itself is Broken Arrow Lady Tiger softball’s annual trip to Colorado for the Erie Tournament of Champions.
A year ago, Broken Arrow dominated the tournament, going 6-0 while outscoring opponents 73-9.
This year, Coach Randall King is taking a 13-3 team – winners in 10 of last 11 games – to the Rocky Mountains. The lone loss during that span came when a two-out defensive miscue eventually led to four Deer Creek runs in bottom of the seventh. The final was 6-3.
Lady Tiger wins during the run include victories over District 6A-1 leader Edmond North, District 6A-3 second-place Union, and 2017 State Runner-Up Moore.
Though Broken Arrow doesn’t have the big power bat in the middle of the order like it had in Mary Collins – now playing at Oklahoma State - the last few years, King’s team has still scored 129 runs. That’s more than 8 runs a game. In contrast, Lady Tiger pitchers have allowed just 50 runs through 16 games.
Broken Arrow has four players hitting better than .400. Sophomore leadoff hitter McKayla Carney is hitting at the nearly unheard of clip of .491. Right behind her is Maci Cole, another sophomore, who has a .489 batting average. A couple of juniors, Kailee Reese is hitting .452, while Raegan Edwards, the team leader with 20 RBIs, is batting .405.
Though the Lady Tigers will be back home for classes on Tuesday, their next four games, not including the Bixby Tournament, will be on the road. The first game at Lady Tiger Field in September will be on the 18th.
