Broken Arrow Public Schools has promoted longtime Athletic Director Ken Ellett to a new role as executive director of student programs, where he will oversee all student activities and fine arts. In addition, former Broken Arrow assistant football coach and administrator Steve Dunn will take over as executive director of athletics.

The moves were approved by the Broken Arrow Public Schools Board of Education at their regular meeting on May 14 and will take effect on May 29.

“Ken Ellett has been the face of Broken Arrow athletics for the last 28 seasons,” Superintendent Dr. Janet Dunlop said. “I am excited to see how his leadership and vast knowledge can help enhance student experiences on a broader scale.”

Ellett joined BAPS in 1990, hired by Dr. Clarence Oliver after serving as director of football operations at the University of Wisconsin. Under his guidance, Broken Arrow has captured 51 team state championships and a baseball national championship in 2011. He also played a key role in transitioning the football team from Kirkland Field to Memorial Stadium in 2000, and the construction of the Varsity Training Center and indoor practice facility which opened in 2014.

“It’s hard to believe how much progress we’ve made together since I moved here with my family almost 30 years ago,” Ellett said. “I’m so grateful to all of our coaches, student-athletes and our community for everything they’ve done over the years. I am excited to start my new role and bring some new opportunities for our students.”

Steve Dunn rejoins the Broken Arrow family after serving as executive director of operations for Owasso Public Schools. He previously served as Broken Arrow’s assistant director of athletics under Ellett from 2014-2017 after nine years in coaching, including four seasons on Steve Spavital’s staff from 2010-2013. “Words cannot express how thrilled I am to be coming back home to Broken Arrow,” Dunn said. “I learned so much working with Ken Ellett in the past and look forward to continuing to pick his brain as I work with [Assistant Director of Athletics] Melenda Knight and Coach [David] Alexander to continue to drive our district forward.”

“Steve Dunn has every attribute we could ask for when we looked to fill Ken’s shoes,” Associate Superintendent Chuck Perry said. “He dreams big and has an engaging personality that is contagious. You don’t have to talk to him long to walk away inspired by his vision for where he sees our district and our community going together.”
